Powertrain Data Engineer, Drive Unit (m/w/d) – Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg

The Role 

Tesla is looking to hire an enthusiastic Data Engineer in Powertrain,
supporting the Drive Unit business at Gigafactory Berlin. You will be
responsible for building the reporting necessary to measure key performance
indicators for Tesla’s production, quality and maintenance teams, increasing
efficiency through data and analytics. During our ramp up phase in Berlin, you
‘d make sure data streams from new equipment are correctly implemented in the
data architecture of our Manufacturing execution System. 

Provide proactive analysis and build models helping to drive business
programs, inform decisions and optimize operations. Act as an advisor to the
business, overcome challenges and build the future. This role will interact
with numerous internal customers who consume and use data in their
decision-making processes. The ability to work with and clearly understand
these internal customers’ needs will be critical to succeed in this role.  


  • Contribute to the commissioning of new production lines, ensuring data connectivity to factory systems and proper end-to-end Data flow.  
  • Support the analysis of manufacturing and equipment data. Extract useful statistics, insights, trends and drive corrective and meaningful improvements towards production quality excellence and best customer experience. 
  • Work effectively with engineers and conduct end-to-end analysis, from data requirement gathering, to data processing and modeling 
  • Interpret data, analyze results using statistical techniques and provide reporting 
  • Monitor key product metrics, understanding root causes of changes in metrics 
  • Support the identification, analysis, and interpretation of trends or patterns in complex data sets and depict the story via dashboards and reports 
  • Maintain and extend existing data visualizations, data pipelines and dashboard enhancement requests 
  • Support data acquisition from primary or secondary data sources and maintain databases/data systems to empower operational and exploratory analysis 
  • Support automation analyses and authoring pipelines via SQL and Python based ETL framework 
  • Drive underlying data systems improvement by working with key cross-functional stakeholders 
  • Perform data quality validations to ensure data creation is as per the business needs and expectations 
  • Work with management to prioritize business and information needs 


  • MSc or BSc degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent in experience.
  • Multiple years of relevant experience in an automated manufacturing environment is a strong plus. 
  • Experience writing software with Python 
  • Experience with multiple data architecture paradigms (e.g. SQL, NoSQL, Kafka, Spark) 
  • Experience and interest in frontend development 
  • Knowledge of various data communication protocols (e.g. REST API, Websockets) 
  • Able to work under pressure while collaborating and managing competing demands with tight deadlines 
  • Fundamental knowledge of statistical data analysis 
  • A passion and curiosity for data and data-driven decision making 

Desired Skills 

  • Experience with statistical data analysis software (e.g. JMP, Minitab) 
  • Experience with machine learning libraries and frameworks (Tensorflow, Keras, etc) 
  • Familiarity with continuous integration pipelines (Docker, Jenkins, Kubernetes) 
  • Drive to introduce a predictive model to a production environment 
  • Success building and tuning image classification models
