About the team

The Credit Detection team brings together machine learning with product development to lower Stripe’s credit risk at scale, while retaining a best in class user experience. Achieving this goal is critical to Stripe’s long term growth and profitability. We protect Stripe’s brand while also protecting the company from losses that can put our financial position at risk.

What you’ll do

The Credit Detection team consists of machine learning, backend, and full stack engineers who want to tackle this problem through creative new product ideas and impactful machine learning models. We work closely with our credit partners in product, business, data science, and operations to prioritize and drive our shared strategy. We are continuously exploring and undertaking new ideas and as an Engineering Manager you can have an outsized impact on the future of how Stripe manages risk at scale. 

Responsibilities

  • Own critical loss and user experience metrics and focus the team on these metrics
  • Set and execute a vision for how we detect and mitigate credit losses at scale at Stripe
  • Set and execute a vision for incorporating new advances in machine learning in ways that best achieve the team’s business objectives
  • Support the team in delivering a high level of technical quality and impact
  • Recruit great engineers, in collaboration with Stripe’s recruiting team
  • Develop engineers on the team, helping them advance in their careers
  • Contribute to engineering-wide initiatives as a member of Stripe’s engineering management team

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • At least 3 years of engineering management experience in a machine learning space
  • An advanced degree in a quantitative field (e.g. computer science, stats, physics, engineering) 
  • Experience with fostering a great culture within a team 
  • The ability to lead in a fast paced collaborative environment involving different partners and subject matter experts
  • The ability to thrive on a high level of autonomy and responsibility and a bias toward impact
  • Experience recruiting and hiring great engineers
  • Experience with applying machine learning to real-world problems
