Data Engineer – Personalization

The Personalization team makes deciding what to play next easier and more enjoyable for every listener. From Daily Mix to Discover Weekly, we’re behind some of Spotify’s most-loved features. We built them by understanding the world of music and podcasts better than anyone else. Join us and you’ll keep millions of users listening by making great recommendations to each and every one of them. We ask that our team members be physically located in Central European time or Eastern Standard/Daylight time zones for the purposes of our collaboration hours.

The Home Ranking & Home Assembly teams within Spotify’s Personalization Mission, focus on what to recommend on Spotify’s Homepage and where, by building the models to rank and find the perfect content mix and position for all music & podcast content, fully tailored to each user. We are looking for a Data Engineer who is passionate about data and metrics to focus on building structured, high-quality data solutions for the personalization models powering the personalization models behind the optimal ranking, balancing and positioning of content in Spotify’s Homepage. In collaboration with a team of ML Engineers, Data Engineers, Backend Engineers and Research Scientists you will use this data to help inform and guide decision-making and strategy for the Home sessions of each one of the 380+ million of Spotify users. For the purposes of collaboration, we ask that our team members operate between the Eastern and Central European time zones. 


What You’ll Do


  • Build large-scale batch and real-time data pipelines with data processing frameworks like Scio, Spark, the Google Cloud Platform, Dataflow, and Tensorflow.
  • Use best practices in continuous integration and delivery.
  • Help drive optimization, testing and tooling to improve data quality.
  • Collaborate with ML engineers and business partners.
  • Work in multi-functional agile teams to continuously experiment, iterate and deliver on new product objectives.
  • Work on whatever you want during our regular hackathons.

    Who You Are


  • You know how to work with complex heterogeneous data, preferably with distributed systems such as Hadoop, BigTable, and Cassandra.
  • You know how to write distributed services in Java or Scala.
  • You are knowledgeable about data modeling, data access, and data storage techniques.
  • You appreciate agile software processes, data-driven development, reliability, and responsible experimentation.
  • You understand the value of partnership within teams.

  • We are a distributed workforce enabling our band members to find a work mode that is best for them!
  • Where in the world? For this role, it can be within the Americas or European regions in which we have a work location and is within working hours. 
  • Working hours? We operate between the Eastern and Central European time zones for collaboration.
